Concrete Slab Thickness
|
Concrete slabs are used at many places like the driveway, pathway, garden, and basement. However, thickness of the slab is different for different purposes. If one takes the proper measurement of the area then the mistakes committed during fixing a concrete slab can be avoided. If the owner wants to have a complete and durable product then he/she must ensure that everything is properly done.
Concrete slab thickness will depend upon the load it has to bare. In a normal case, if the concrete slab is to be fixed in the house then the concrete slab thickness can be approximately 4 inches. However, if the load on the slab is more occasionally then 5 inches slab is suggested. For driveways, the concrete slab thickness should be 7-8inches. To prepare the base for the slab, dig the ground level to the depth of the slab, so that the slab fits in properly. After cutting the ground level, remove all the material like stones and roots. Moreover, prepare an even surface. Compact the final base with vibratory plates by using gravel or sandy soil. Use plastic and metal for the edges if a straight lumber is not available.
Make sure that the concrete mix meets the requirement for comprehensive strength. If required compressive strength is not there then water will cause excessive shrinkage, which will lead to cracks. One can use a plasticizer to avoid this problem. A person can use fibers to control the shrinkage. One should also avoid adding excess water to the mixture than what is required. If it is necessary then help of the person, who is working on the machine, can be taken. As the mixture is prepared, spread it over the desired area. Spread it evenly all over the surface and use a vibratory screed to consolidate low slump areas. Create control joints at both the length and the breadth of the slab. Joint spacing should not be 15 feet long. If spacing more than 15 feet is required then in that case use of steel is recommended. As soon as concrete dries out completely, place a curing material over it to prevent it from moisture. Moreover, if one does not want to use a minimum of 4inch of concrete slab, then he/she can use the mesh and pour it in the desired area. The only thing to be kept in mind while pouring the concrete in the desired area is to make sure to pull the woven wire as one pours the concrete. The concrete slab thickness shall not be less than what is suggested. After the slab is fixed in the area, binding is done. Binding can be done with sand or quarry dust. After binding anti termite spray is sprayed over it. The concrete slab thickness is around 150 millimeters. One should make a concrete slab with the given thickness for the required purpose; if proper thickness is not taken then the slab can be damaged. |
